Flowers Delivered to Canggu, All Nine of Its Beaches

The address you are about to give me is probably not an address. In Canggu it is a villa name and a dropped pin, because these places went up on paddy tracks nobody named, so what actually gets it there is a landmark and a phone number. It goes to a rental villa, sometimes a café off Batu Bolong, sometimes a hotel desk, and you are usually overseas when it lands. I'm Ayu, and I have had the shop in Seminyak since 2013, still making the arrangements myself in the back room (most days with Wayan in the way). Order before 6pm and it goes out the same day.

"The flowers are absolutely beautiful!! Easy to order online on their website, I wanted them delivered around 12 pm the next day, and they communicated with me via WeChat very clearly, with quick responses. They clearly communicated with me when they finished the flowers and sent them out for delivery. It was delivered perfectly on time! Highly recommend"

On what actually worked here

It was WhatsApp, not WeChat, but I am not going to argue with somebody who left me five stars. Carly ordered the day before for a set hour, which is the version of this job I can actually control. Same day into a Canggu gang at five in the afternoon is a different animal. So if there is an hour that matters, a birthday lunch, a check-in, somebody landing, order the day before and tell me the hour (people apologise for being fussy about this, and they should not, it is the most useful thing you can hand me). After that it is just flowers and a bike.

Two Villas on the Same Lane, Two Different Climates

Two villas on the same Canggu gang can be two different environments for the same bouquet. One is open on three sides onto a pool deck, so by three in the afternoon the flowers are sitting in whatever the air is doing, roughly 31 degrees at 80 percent humidity, and they get no cool night to recover in either, because the overnight low on this coast is about 24. The other has a bedroom with the air conditioner going (which the villa listing will have called a feature, and it is, just not for the flowers). Better on temperature, much worse for anything parked under the vent. Dry moving air pulls water out of a petal faster than a cut stem can draw it back up, and the edges go papery from the outside in, usually by the second morning.

So I ask where it is going before I ask what you want in it (which annoys people who came here to buy flowers, not to answer questions). For an open pool deck I build on dendrobium from the Bedugul growers above 1,000 metres, anthurium, heliconia and the tropical foliage that outlasts everything else in the vase. Roses I will send happily into an air-conditioned room, and you should know what a rose is by the time it reaches Canggu. It was grown somewhere else and cut a good while ago. Then a plane, then customs, then a wholesaler. The refrigeration through the middle of that is partial at best, so frangipani cut two days ago still beats it. If you want the roses anyway, say so and you will get them (I am not steering you off them, I just want you knowing what you have got). There are two I will actually talk you out of. Hydrangea loses water through its head faster than the stem can pull it back up, so on an open pool deck it is finished inside a day. Gosh, sometimes less. Tulip opens flat and lies down. I stock hydrangea, so that is me talking myself out of a sale.

Three things decide how long it lasts up there, and none of them is what the photo looked like. Where it is standing. Whether the vent is pointing at it, which somebody at the other end can fix in ten seconds if you tell them to. And whether the water actually gets changed, which in a 30 degree room means every day or two, not every four. Our Balinese arrangements are built for 7 to 9 days in this climate. A rose on an open pool deck in February will not give you that, and I would rather say so now than explain it to you on day three.

The four kinds of Canggu address, and what each one costs us

01
Street and number

Jl. Raya Canggu, Jl. Batu Bolong, Jl. Pantai Berawa. A real road with a real number on the building.

Rarely goes wrong

Give usThe address as written.
02
Named property

A hotel or a named villa complex on a named road. Finding it is easy. Getting past the desk is the part that takes time.

Held at reception

Give usGuest name as booked, room number, checkout date.
03
Villa name in a gang

Most of residential Canggu. A lane one motorbike wide, no name on it, no numbers, and villa names that repeat across the island.

Where most failures happen

Give usVilla name, nearest landmark, and a phone number.
04
A map pin only

Sent from overseas with nothing attached. Pins drift, and on new-build villas they often land on the wrong side of a field.

Worst of the four

Give usThe pin plus a phone number. Never the pin alone.

Bars show how often we have to ring somebody before the bike can leave, not how likely the delivery is to fail.

03 · How the order moves

From a Seminyak Back Room to a Canggu Gate

There is no warehouse. There is a back room with buckets in it, and me in it, and your order on the bench.
Step one
Order online or on WhatsApp before 6pm Bali time. Anything after that goes out the next morning, unless you message me and I can still make it work, which depends entirely on what else is already on the bench.
Step two
I check the address against the four types above. If it is a pin with no phone number, I message you before I cut anything.
Step three
Built that day in Seminyak, on a foam base with the stem ends in water, in a wide triangle. The shape comes off the offerings I grew up folding, and it also happens to survive a motorbike far better than anything tall and airy, which is the reason it stayed.
Step four
Wrapped loose so air moves through it. Sealed cellophane in 85 percent humidity builds a small greenhouse around the flowers, and grey mould gets in before the recipient does.
Step five
Kadek rings the number on the order, then rides it out. It goes into a hand, either the recipient's or the villa staff's, or to the desk at a hotel. It does not get left on a step in the sun.
04 · What people send here

What Actually Gets Ordered Into Canggu

The Canggu order list does not look like the Nusa Dua one, and the pattern is blunt about why. Almost all of it goes to a villa somebody is renting rather than a house somebody owns, and a good half has nothing to do with romance at all. The three below cover most of it, and there is a wider set in popular categories if none of them fit.

Villa rentals

Nobody in a Rental Villa Owns a Vase

Your person is in Canggu for six weeks, or three months, or however long the visa runs (nobody ever tells me which). They have a pool, a kitchen they half use, and no vase. A wrapped bunch handed over at that door goes into a water glass or the sink, and then it gets forgotten about.

I pack every Canggu order myself, so I can tell you without going and looking that vase-inclusive sets outsell every other shape we send up there. The reason is the housing. The vase goes on as an extra, or you take the roses with vase, teddy and chocolates, which is the one that goes out most in that shape.

A vase earns its place practically as well. It holds enough water that the level does not drop below the stem ends overnight, which in an open-air kitchen at 30 degrees it very much can. Tell them to change the water every day or two, not every four. It sounds fussy, yeah. It is the difference between day five and day nine.

And keep them off the fruit. Villa welcome baskets in Canggu are mango, papaya, banana and pineapple, and ripening tropical fruit gives off ethylene, a gas that ages a cut flower at a few parts per billion. Staff put the basket on the long table because the long table is where things go, and the flowers get set down beside it. Lilies drop their buds early, carnations curl at the petal edge, and the person who paid thinks the flowers arrived tired. They were not tired. They were sitting next to a pineapple.

Birthdays and everything else

Most of What Goes to Canggu Is Not Romantic

A friend, a housemate, someone on the other side of a laptop, a birthday nobody is throwing a party for. Roses in that situation are reading the room wrong, and the recipient will be polite about it. A lot of these are people who have not spoken properly in months and used the birthday as the excuse. Fine. It is a good excuse.

The mixed bouquets do that work, the gerbera and iris and lily ones, and they rank third in this area for exactly that reason. Alesha is the one that goes out most. The wider birthday range is there if you want a balloon or a bear on it. A fair share of these come from inside Canggu itself, somebody three lanes over sending to a housemate, and those are the easy ones because you can hand me the landmark yourself.

Somebody ordered flowers for a dog's birthday. His name was Ben, he had the best bandana I have seen on an animal (somebody had put real thought into that bandana), and I laughed the whole way through making it. So if you are sitting there wondering whether your occasion is too small to bother with, Ben got a bouquet. For the card, short beats clever. "Happy birthday, wish I was there" does more than three sentences of trying.

One warning on the lily. The anthers stain, they stain permanently, and every villa up there has white linen and a pale concrete bench for them to land on (whoever designed Canggu did not consult a florist). I pull the anthers out here. The buds that open later will need the same, so pass that on.

Sending from overseas

What Do You Send When You Cannot See the Room?

You are choosing a gift for a room you have never stood in, in a country you are not in, for someone who will not tell you if it missed (they will say it was lovely, they always say it was lovely). That is most of my Canggu orders and it is a genuinely hard brief, so I will give you the honest shortcut.

Red is the one that needs no interpretation. Nobody at the other end has to work out what you meant by it, which is why the twelve red roses is the most ordered single item we send into Canggu, ahead of everything prettier. The full rose range is the safe end of the menu.

If you are unsure, send the arrangement rather than the bunch. Canggu villas are open plan and built to be looked at, so an arrangement gets put on the long table and stays there. A bunch needs a vase and five spare minutes at the other end, which is asking a lot of somebody's Tuesday.

One thing this area does that the others do not. The pink I send to Canggu most is a lavender-pink with a cool undertone, and I picked it for how it sits against concrete and pale timber, because a good share of these get photographed before anyone has smelled them (which I have made my peace with). If the villa is grey and rattan, the pink twelve reads better in that photo than the red does.

And put something on the card. The flowers go in the bin somewhere around day nine, and people keep the card, sometimes for years.

Something else

When None of Those Three Is the Order You Are Trying to Place

None of the three above is your order. Fine. An anniversary where the number matters, a sorry that has to land before they wake up, a hamper going to a villa with eight people in it, or a wedding you are not attending and cannot ask anybody about.

If you want me to just decide, the one I reach for when somebody says "you pick" is the Bali Bright Bunch. Local stems, built for an open villa, and bright enough to survive being photographed in bad light.

Otherwise, message me on WhatsApp and tell me the situation in plain words, including the bit you are worried about. The gift range is there if you would sooner look first, and if it should not be flowers at all I wrote up five gifts that work in Canggu for exactly that. I will tell you what I would send and what I would not. Takes about a minute.

05 · What goes wrong

It Is Almost Never the Flowers

The delivery that fails in Canggu fails at the address, not at the bench. A villa name with no number. A gang with no name on it, or a pin dropped on the road instead of the gate. Sometimes a villa name that three other properties on this island are also using. None of it is carelessness. All of that ground was rice paddy and coconut grove, worked under subak, the irrigation collectives that still run the water for the farmland that is left. The tourism started with a surfing contest in 1990. There are somewhere around 324 hotels in the area now, and villas nobody has counted. Nobody went back and numbered the lanes, because the lanes were never streets. They were paddy access tracks.

So we do the boring thing instead. We ask for a phone number for the recipient or the villa, the villa name, and a landmark near it. Well, I ask. Kadek is the one who finds out whether it was enough, and he rings before the bike leaves instead of riding into a lane on hope. He reckons the pin-only orders are the worst of the four, and he is the one who ends up at the dead end working out which of six gates is the right one. I am not describing somebody else's problem, either. There is a Google plus code on my own contact page, 8557+88J, and it is on there because a street name and a number in Seminyak will not reliably get a driver to my door. People walk into my shop looking for Revolver, which is a coffee place near me famous enough to have its own queue, and they have a phone in their hand the whole time (the phone is the funny part). Seminyak at least has names on most of its streets. Canggu is the same problem with the names taken off.

Give us those three things at the order stage and you have removed most of what goes wrong up there. Not much of a trick, but it is the one that works.

The second thing people write to me about is the photograph

I will not promise you the exact stem in the picture, and you should have the reason rather than the disclaimer. Local supply moves daily here, and it moves on a calendar you have never seen. Every temple in Bali has an anniversary, an odalan, and it comes round every 210 days instead of every year. Canggu has two old ones on its coastline, Pura Batu Bolong and Pura Batu Mejan out at Echo Beach. When one of them falls due, the flowers that go into offerings get scarce and dear within a couple of kilometres of it, and the road past it can close for a procession with no warning. One village inland, nothing has changed. So it moves the price of my flowers and it closes Kadek's road, and neither has anything to do with Valentine's Day.

What I work to is the colour direction, the size and the shape. If the market has nothing that morning I would put in my own house, I message you before I build it. Slower than substituting quietly, and the only version I can live with.

The other thing, in season

Wet season here is November to March, or that is what the calendar says. In 2025 it flooded properly in early September, weeks before anybody was expecting it, and Echo Beach came up covered in debris. More than half the road surface in this area is rated inadequate, and about the same share of the drainage is, so once the paddy that used to take the rain is roofs and driveways the water goes into the lane instead. A gang that is already hard to find is unreachable for a couple of hours after a real downpour. I would sooner tell you the window got wider than sell you a time I cannot hold. Your order still goes out.

How to Send Flowers to Canggu

Phone and WhatsApp

+62 813 3862 5637. WhatsApp on the same number is the fastest way to reach me, because it is what everybody in Indonesia actually uses.

Email indofloristshop@gmail.com if you prefer, it is just slower (I read it in the evening, and some evenings not until the morning after). English and Indonesian both fine.

Same day cutoff

6pm Bali time, seven days a week including Sunday. If you have missed it, message me anyway. Some nights I can still do something and some nights I cannot, and you will get a straight answer either way.

Bali is UTC+8. Sydney runs two hours ahead of us most of the year and three in daylight saving, so a 6pm cutoff here is 8pm your time, or 9pm through the summer. You can order after dinner in Australia and still have it land in Canggu the same day. Almost nobody realises that and it costs people a day.

6pm is later than anyone else on this island advertises, which I only know because I go and look. Here is the catch, and it is a real one. We sit eight degrees off the equator, so the sun goes down around a quarter past six every single day of the year and the time barely moves between seasons. A late order is a dark-lane delivery. The landmark and the phone number matter more the later you order, and with those two things 6pm is a real cutoff instead of a hopeful one.

One date a year nothing moves at all. Nyepi, the day of silence, when the island stops and even the airport shuts. It falls in March and it shifts every year, so if your date is in March, message me and I will check it against that year's calendar instead of guessing.

Getting into Canggu

People say Canggu as though it were one street. There are nine beaches inside it: Canggu Beach, Batu Bolong, Echo Beach, Berawa, Nelayan, Pererenan, Seseh, Mengening and Kayu Putih.

We deliver behind all of them, and inland through Padang Linjong, Tibubeneng, Tanah Barak and Subak Sari. If your villa is named after one of those beaches, so are about forty others, which is why the landmark matters more than the name does.

Put this in the address box

Villa or property name, the nearest landmark a rider would recognise, and a mobile number for the recipient or the villa manager. If it is a hotel, the guest's name exactly as they booked it plus the checkout date, because the hotel order that goes wrong most often is the one that lands the morning after the guest flew home.

Order before 6pm today and it is at the villa tonight.

Seminyak shop since 2013 Open every day Made by Ayu, not a warehouse Same day before 6pm
07 · After you order

After You Order

The order comes to me, not to a call centre. Well, to my phone, which at eleven at night is the same thing. I read the card message, I check the address against the four types further up, and if the phone number is missing I message you before I cut anything. If you are asleep in London when I do that, it waits until you answer, which is the one delay I have never found a way around (I have tried guessing, it goes badly).

If something is not right, WhatsApp me on +62 813 3862 5637 and say what happened. I would rather hear it on the day than read it in a review three weeks later, and I have redone arrangements for less.

One thing we do not do, and it is better you hear it from me. There is no automatic message when the flowers land. Some days I message you when they go out the door, some days I am elbow deep in something and I forget, so please do not read anything into the silence either way. It is me and Kadek and one motorbike. If the arrival matters, message me on the day and I will tell you where it is.

One more thing, because you are going to be sitting somewhere else wondering. Most people do not message the sender straight away. They photograph it, they put it on the table, they get on with their day, and the thank you turns up that night or the next morning or not at all. The flowers have already done their work in that room by then. You just do not get to watch it happen, and there is no honest way around that part.

My only proof came from a man who never told me anything. He ordered an apology arrangement, I made it, it went out, and I heard nothing back. Two days later he ordered thank-you flowers to the same address. I still do not know what happened in between.

Kadek
Does the deliveries
Between construction shifts

The riding half is Kadek's, and it would be dishonest of me to write it for him.

Most of the lanes off Batu Bolong are one motorbike wide. A car cannot turn around in them, so everything for Canggu goes on the bike. A van would be a van that cannot get down the lane, plus the petrol. From November to March those same lanes take the rain. The fields that used to soak it up are villas and driveways now. I leave earlier in the wet season and I check the route before I load up. If the water is across a lane I go around, and going around costs time. That is why I will not promise you a time to the minute. I will tell you what the window actually is.

He is usually right about the roads, and about most other things, which is the annoying part of him. Give us a villa name and a phone number. The rest is our problem.

Jl. Camplung Tanduk, Seminyak

I grew up in Gianyar watching my grandmother make canang sari every morning before anyone else in the house was awake. Wow, the patience of that woman. It is where I learned where colours go about twenty years before anyone taught me a word for it. There was always a sparrow trying to eat them. Then hotels: a resort near Nusa Dua, then another one, then a fancy property in Ubud where the staff did not speak to guests unless spoken to first (you learn to stand very still).

I opened the shop on Jl. Camplung Tanduk in 2013 and it is still mine, mine and Kadek's, and our son Wayan's if you ask him. Nobody else owns it and nobody else makes the flowers. The long version is on the about page if you have the time and it is very long. Fair warning.
