Vanilla is the safe choice. Almost everybody likes vanilla. Coconut is the tropical choice. It smells like a Bali holiday and people buy it because they are on one. Frangipani is the floral choice. Sweet and heady and very Balinese. Lavender is none of those things. Lavender is the functional choice. People pick lavender because it does something the other three do not. It calms. Not in a vague "relaxation" way. In a measurable, biological way.

The compound responsible is linalool. It makes up roughly thirty percent of lavender essential oil and it interacts with GABA receptors in the brain. Those are the same receptors targeted by anti-anxiety medication. Linalool does not have the same potency but it produces a version of the same effect: lowered heart rate, reduced cortisol, slower breathing. There is a reason every spa on this island burns lavender. There is a reason the scent is in pillow sprays, bath salts, and sleep aids. The connection between lavender and calm is not marketing. Our candle maker sources the lavender oil from a grower in East Java who distils it from Lavandula angustifolia, the same species used in French perfumery. The Indonesian-grown oil has a slightly warmer profile than French or Tasmanian lavender because the tropical growing conditions produce a different ratio of linalool to linalyl acetate. Less sharp. How Lavender Ended Up in a Flower Shop

When I first tested candle scents in 2016, lavender was the one I nearly cut. The first batch our candle maker produced smelled sharp and medicinal. Too much camphor, not enough floral. I lit one in the shop on Jl. Camplung Tanduk and a customer wrinkled her nose. The coconut candle beside it sold instantly. The lavender sat on the shelf for two weeks.

I told the candle maker the blend needed adjusting. He sourced a different lavender oil from an East Java distillery that processed at lower temperatures and preserved more of the floral esters. The second batch was a different candle. Softer on the opening, deeper on the burn. The same customer who had wrinkled her nose came back three weeks later, smelled the new version, and bought two. Care

Same care as every candle in the range. Trim the wick to five millimetres before lighting. On the first burn, keep it lit until the wax pool reaches the glass on all sides. About ninety minutes. This prevents tunneling. Lavender oil is slightly more volatile than vanilla or coconut, so the scent throw is strongest in the first ten burns and then settles into a mellower version of itself for the remaining twenty-five or so hours. That mellow phase is actually the part most people prefer. Store with the lid on between uses and away from direct sun. The soy wax will not melt at normal Bali room temperature but the amber glass can magnify heat if left in a window and soften the surface.
