Description

Same amber glass jar. Same white label. Same two hundred grams of hand-poured soy wax. The difference is what fills the room when you light it. This is the lavender candle. Third most popular of the four scents we carry and the one with the smallest gap between people who love it and people who would never choose it. Nobody is neutral about lavender. The people who pick this scent are not browsing. They already know.

$15.00 USD. Same day delivery, seven days a week, across all Bali locations including Ubud, Canggu, Pererenan, Uluwatu, Seminyak and Sanur. Organic soy wax, pure lavender essential oil, customisable label, gift boxed with ribbon.

What Makes Lavender Different From the Other Three

Vanilla is the safe choice. Almost everybody likes vanilla. Coconut is the tropical choice. It smells like a Bali holiday and people buy it because they are on one. Frangipani is the floral choice. Sweet and heady and very Balinese. Lavender is none of those things. Lavender is the functional choice. People pick lavender because it does something the other three do not. It calms. Not in a vague "relaxation" way. In a measurable, biological way.

The compound responsible is linalool. It makes up roughly thirty percent of lavender essential oil and it interacts with GABA receptors in the brain. Those are the same receptors targeted by anti-anxiety medication. Linalool does not have the same potency but it produces a version of the same effect: lowered heart rate, reduced cortisol, slower breathing. There is a reason every spa on this island burns lavender. There is a reason the scent is in pillow sprays, bath salts, and sleep aids. The connection between lavender and calm is not marketing. It is chemistry.

Our candle maker sources the lavender oil from a grower in East Java who distils it from Lavandula angustifolia, the same species used in French perfumery. The Indonesian-grown oil has a slightly warmer profile than French or Tasmanian lavender because the tropical growing conditions produce a different ratio of linalool to linalyl acetate. Less sharp. More rounded. It smells less like a European pharmacy and more like something you would actually want in your bedroom.

A Phone Call From Singapore

I picked up the phone on a Thursday afternoon. A man calling from Singapore. His mother was in Bali for ten days staying in a villa near Gianyar. She had been unwell for most of the year. Not critically, but enough that the family had been worried. The Bali trip was her first holiday in fourteen months. She had booked it herself. Told nobody until the week before. He said "she is finally doing something for herself and I want her to know we noticed."

He wanted something small and personal. Not flowers because the villa already had flowers in every room. Not chocolates because of a dietary restriction he half-explained and then stopped. He saw the candle on the website and asked about the scents. I described all four. When I said lavender helps with sleep and stress, he went quiet for a second and said "that one." He asked for a custom label. It read: "Rest well, Ma. We love you." Wayan printed it within the hour. Kadek delivered to the villa that evening. His mother called him the next morning. She told him she had lit the candle before bed, read the label three times, and slept seven hours straight for the first time in months. He called me back to order two more for her sisters.

When someone orders a candle as an add-on to flowers, vanilla is the right call nine times out of ten. The flowers carry the visual impact and the vanilla adds warmth without competing. But when the candle is the gift itself, I push lavender. Vanilla is a scent. Lavender is an experience. The person lights it and something shifts in the room. Their shoulders drop. Their breathing changes. I had a guest at a villa in Pecatu tell me she moved the candle from the living room to her bathroom on the first night because she wanted it closer while she was in the bath. By the third night she had it on her bedside table. A $15 candle that migrates through a villa room by room is doing something a $50 bouquet cannot do. Flowers decorate a space. This candle changes how someone feels inside it.

The Scent That Divides a Room

Lavender ranks third out of four candle scents and I could move it to second with one decision: make the lavender lighter. Soften it. Pull it toward the sweet, powdery lavender that fabric softener uses. That version would offend nobody and sell more units. I will not do it.

The lavender in this candle is the real thing. Herbal. Green. With a camphor edge that you notice on the first inhale before the linalool sweetens it on the second. The people who love it, love it because it smells like actual lavender plants, not like a laundry product. The people who do not pick it are usually comparing it to something they already associate with lavender from a different context. Soap. Drawer liners. Their grandmother's wardrobe. Those associations are not the oil. They are synthetic fragrance built to mimic one narrow part of what lavender smells like.

Real lavender oil has depth. The top note is sharp and herbal and clean. After five minutes of burn time the middle notes come through: floral, slightly woody, with a sweetness that the opening did not promise. After an hour the base is all calm. Warm and resinous and quiet. Three stages. The synthetic version plays one note from start to finish.

People tell me lavender is old-fashioned. I hear it at least twice a month. "My mum would love that but it's a bit grandma, isn't it?" That reaction comes from years of smelling synthetic lavender in cleaning products, not from the actual oil. Real lavender essential oil smells nothing like a toilet block. The rule of thumb I give anyone on the fence: if the recipient has ever booked a massage, bought a bath product that was not on sale, or described themselves as stressed, they will love this candle. That covers about eighty percent of the adults I know. The other twenty percent want coconut or frangipani and that is fine. But do not skip lavender because it sounds old-fashioned. The people who skip it are usually picturing the wrong lavender.

Who Orders the Lavender

The buyer profile is different from the other three scents. Vanilla buyers often grab the candle as a quick add-on while ordering roses or an arrangement. They scroll, they pick vanilla, they move on. Lavender buyers pause. They compare. They read the descriptions. And then they pick lavender with purpose. The average lavender order takes longer to complete than any other candle scent because the person choosing it has done more thinking about what the recipient needs.

Wellness-minded senders. Yoga retreat welcome gifts in Pererenan and Canggu. Mother's Day orders from adult children who know their mother would rather have a quiet evening with a candle than a vase of flowers. Get-well gifts where the sender wants something useful alongside the sentiment. Post-surgery recovery gifts. Stress gifts where the subtext is "I know you are going through something and I want you to sleep." The Teddy and Candle Package pairs this with a plush bear. The Bali Bliss packages combine candles with flowers and extras. Apology gifts. Birthday gifts for anyone over forty who has started to value rest more than excitement.

We deliver to every area of Bali. Kuta, Legian, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Denpasar, Tabanan, Ungasan. Seven days a week.

How Lavender Ended Up in a Flower Shop

When I first tested candle scents in 2016, lavender was the one I nearly cut. The first batch our candle maker produced smelled sharp and medicinal. Too much camphor, not enough floral. I lit one in the shop on Jl. Camplung Tanduk and a customer wrinkled her nose. The coconut candle beside it sold instantly. The lavender sat on the shelf for two weeks.

I told the candle maker the blend needed adjusting. He sourced a different lavender oil from an East Java distillery that processed at lower temperatures and preserved more of the floral esters. The second batch was a different candle. Softer on the opening, deeper on the burn. The same customer who had wrinkled her nose came back three weeks later, smelled the new version, and bought two. One for herself and one for her mother in Yokohama. Lavender has been in the range since and the oil source has never changed.

Care

Same care as every candle in the range. Trim the wick to five millimetres before lighting. On the first burn, keep it lit until the wax pool reaches the glass on all sides. About ninety minutes. This prevents tunneling. Lavender oil is slightly more volatile than vanilla or coconut, so the scent throw is strongest in the first ten burns and then settles into a mellower version of itself for the remaining twenty-five or so hours. That mellow phase is actually the part most people prefer. Store with the lid on between uses and away from direct sun. The soy wax will not melt at normal Bali room temperature but the amber glass can magnify heat if left in a window and soften the surface.
