What Arrives

Bright golden yellow fabric with a full-coverage print in deep forest green. The batik pattern is botanical, the same stylised leaves and flowers as the blue and pink versions, but the colour combination does something the others do not. Yellow and green reads as the island itself. Rice paddy terraces in Ubud, frangipani petals on temple steps, morning light through palm canopy. The blue version reads as beach. The pink version reads as celebration. This one reads as Bali.

The green print sits on top of the yellow ground with strong contrast. No subtlety. You can read the botanical detail clearly from across a room, which is different from the blue version where the peach-on-navy detail is quieter and the pink version where the dark red-on-magenta sits closer in tone. When I picked the fabric combination at the Klungkung workshop, I chose yellow because it was the most different from the blue and pink options I had already selected. The customers in Ubud and the hinterland areas order yellow at a higher rate than Seminyak or Kuta customers. Ubud buyers see themselves in this colour. It matches their surroundings. A Villa Manager in Kedungu

A property manager running three private villas near Kedungu Beach, west of Tabanan, called me in November. She wanted a standing arrangement for guest welcome gifts. I test every batch of sarongs when they arrive from the workshop. Not every piece. But three or four from each delivery. I run them under a tap for thirty seconds and check for colour bleed. Yellow dye is the hardest to stabilise in batik because the molecules are smaller than red or blue pigments. They migrate through the wax resist more easily during the dyeing process. A poorly fixed yellow will bleed green from the overlay pattern the first time it gets wet. The workshop in Klungkung uses a double-mordant fixation with alum and then a tannin rinse to lock the colour. It adds a day to the production time but it means the yellow holds through machine washing at 30 degrees without fading or running. I rejected two workshops before this one because their yellow bled on the first test. The one I use now has never failed a batch in three years. When I tell people the sarong is hand-stamped cotton batik, they nod. When I tell them it survives a washing machine, that is when they understand the quality difference.
